the seventh about the roots of entrepreneurship
Niche businesses are in fact the core of the business
This is the seventh nicheletter for smart and curious people building their niche businesses.
Getting back to the roots of entrepreneurship
My grandparents knew who made their shoes, clothes and food
Just a couple of generations back before internet being a part of our everyday lives, people had a relationship with people who made their stuff. Then we built factories which bought all the raw materials and served us with goods for accessible prices. They used the big quantities as they leverage to get the raw materials for cheap, and their economic power to build factories and invest in R&D. Thanks to this, we have access to cheap clothes, food and tech.
In present, we see a new revolution
We still have people who have big factories and big leverage. The difference this time is our access to this leverage through various platforms. And the fact that we are using way more (online) services than ever.
We have access to a huge amount of information on how to do stuff. We have access to the production part of products and services. If we could combine this with niches, we can build a literally unlimited number of businesses.
Add social media as a tool to connect with other people, customers and suppliers.
If we combine production platforms, social media and niches, we could once again know the person who made our shoes. We know the person who writes the newsletters we are reading or the funny videos we are watching.
Unicorns are good, but have you ever heard about niches?
It’s the single biggest business opportunity for tiny and small brands in the history of humankind. Big brands and unicorns are cool. CEOs of these brands are cool. But the feeling of buying my shirt from an actual human being I admire for her work is very different compared to buying something from Jeff Bezos. To sell something you’ve made for people you like is very different compared to work for a big company and sell their products.
It takes time to find your niche. It takes time to build even a tiny brand on social media. It might take a couple of failures to get to profitability. But please, use what we have. My grandfather would have a couple of rather bad words for you if you won’t at least try :)
Thank you. You just spent your time reading my newsletter. That’s wow. It’s a new newsletter, would you be so kind and share it with your friends, please? One of these might inspire someone to build their own niche biz.
